Lighthouse bean rock

The Bean Rock Lighthouse is in the Auckland harbour near Devonport. It was built in 1871 and was named after a navy captain P C D Bean who helped to chart the harbour in 1840.
The first light at bean rock was fuelled by kerosene. The keeper from 1909-1911 James Anderson lived in Devonport and rowed across before night and would light the light, his son would send him messages in mores code with a torch from his house. Bean rock is now the only wooden cottage light house in New Zealand. It was aotumated in 1912 and now runs on solar power.
